Photonics for better healthcare
Photonics plays an increasing role in a variety of medical techniques and practices, including non-invasive diagnosis, advanced imaging and therapies.
The mission of the Barcelona Medical Photonics (BMP) Network is to promote the research and development activities in photonics being carried out in the Barcelona region through long-standing collaborations between ICFO and its biomedical and clinical partners.

Biophotonics is considered a key enabling technology in developing healthcare in Europe.
Through shared research projects, the BCN Network aims to carry promising photonic technologies from benchtop to bedside thanks to strong collaboration between clinicians, biologists and photonic scientists, bridging the gap between these research sectors.
Our main joint endeavours span initiatives in the disciplines of: neurology and neurosurgery, neonatal care, ophthalmology, oncology, intensive care monitoring, dermatology, rapid clinical analysis, rehabilitation, sports medicine, wellbeing, sleep disorders and anesthesiology, among others.
The reward from such collaborative efforts is not only to achieve scientific investigations of the highest quality, but also to enable multidisciplinary discussions and cross-fertilization from experts in different fields, ensuring research around medical technologies is better aligned with the needs of citizens and society at large.
